thick pigeon
ltm catalogue

One of the more mysterious artists to record for the stylish Crepuscule/Factory axis, Thick Pigeon was essentially a vehicle for songwriter Stanton Miranda and arranger Carter Burwell. Based in New York, the duo recorded a brace of oblique, minimalist singles for Crepuscule in 1981-82 before moving sideways to Factory for their first album in 1984. The second TP album, Miranda Dali, appeared on Crepuscule in 1991. To purchase CDs click here.

"Two unexpectedly rewarding albums which put much of today's alternative music to shame, and still capable of pointing in new directions" (The Wire, April 2004)

TOO CRAZY COWBOYS (LTMCD 2342) £10
In 1984 Miranda and Carter linked up with New Order duo Steven Morris and Gillian Gilbert for their first full album, Too Crazy Cowboys. Recorded in Manchester in late 1983, the album offers a subtle, sculptured sequence of vignettes, described by one reviewer as "a walk through the civilisation of your soul." Now appearing on compact disc for the first time and mastered from the original tapes, TCC features an update of Sudan, more hard-edged cuts such as Crime, DB and Hank, as well as the stately Jess + Bart and Nuns and Soldiers plus three bonus tracks. Booklet includes band history, photographs and discography. Full tracklist: Troglodytes, Sudan, Crime, Help, Fred + Andy, Misuse, Nuns + Soldiers, db, Babcock + Wilcox, Jess + Bart, Hank, Wheels Over Indian Trails, Wheels Over Indian Trails (Version), Pope.

Reviews: "Office favourite!" (Jockey Slut, 5/03); "The edgier set, and nearly impossible to date - neither the sparse electronics nor Miranda's deliberately flattened vocals giving anything away. In mood it prefigures the experimentation of early techno"(The Wire, 4/04); "The use of studio-generated effects, concussed vocals and techno rhythm are like ghostly suggestions of today's electronica scene, whispered down the decades from a more spartan age" (Uncut, 6/04); "Throughout a mood of unsettling drama is present with the excellent Jess + Bart perhaps being their defining moment. Oddly, this album is a considerably less dated affair than many of today's current drop of electro-clash revivalists" (Leonard's Lair, 4/03); "Good to hear it again. Do yourself a favour and check this album out forthwith" (Tangents, 4/03); "Creates a disquieting, oblique soundworld all of it's own devices" (Whisperin' & Hollerin', 4/03)

MIRANDA DALI (LTMCD 2381) £10
Again a collaboration between songwriter/vocalist Stanton Miranda and arranger/producer Carter Burwell, Miranda Dali offers up ten object lessons in oblique pop-art genius. A mood of oblique drama is present throughout, with Miranda's surreal lyrics set against a deceptively 'soft' musical landscape (Dali again!). Guest musicians include Steve Morris, Gillian Gilbert, Ikue Mori, Arthur Russell, Martha Tilson. The ten bonus cuts include the pair of cult, minimalist Thick Pigeon singles released on Crepuscule between 1982 and 1983, Subway/Sudan and Tracy + Pansy/Dog, as well as a number of rare compilation tracks and the unreleased remix single Jess + Bart produced by Be Music/New Order. The closing acoustic version of Sudan features the late, great Arthur Russell on cello. Long unavailable, the CD has been remastered from the original tapes, runs for 70 minutes, and retains the striking cover artwork by Grace Jones stylist Jean-Paul Goude. Full tracklist: Riding, Amerika, One, Breathe, Bird, Gerty, L.D., Angels, Wrong, St. G., Subway, Sudan, Tracy + Pansy, Dog, Jess + Bart, Silhouettes, Woodentop Talk, Jingle Bell Rock, Jess + Bart (mix), Sudan (acoustic).

Reviews: "Songs have been tightened up and the acoutrements of the first album ditched for a smoother sound. Extra track Woodentop Talk is a dispassionate take on eroticism if ever there was one" (The Wire, 4/04); "Art pop doesn't get much better than this. For a man used to scoring film music, Carter Burwell avoided big cinematic gestures; eerie minimalist electronica dominates whilst Miranda trills, whispers and - of course - sings her heart out like a particularly intelligent schoolgirl" (Leonard's Lair, 1/04); "Even when they wig out, TP still enthrall. This is something pretty close to a lost classic" (Whisperin' & Hollerin', 3/04); "Oblique but more finished than the debut. It's sad that pop, unlike other media, is so scornful of this sort of talent" (Uncut, 6/04)
